PBL and Zones of Regulation
Principles of positive behaviour support, play-based learning, trauma-informed practice and social emotional learning underpin our daily practice. Teachers model and share a flexible repertoire of strategies for classroom management which promote student engagement. High expectations- for student behaviour are established and maintained through effective role modelling, explicit teaching and planned responses.
To achieve our mission, key programs prioritised and valued by the school community are:
- Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
- Zones of Regulation
These programs prioritise creating a safe and supportive environment in which students can develop their self-regulation and social-emotional learning. This foundation enhances student engagement and participation, promotes positive mental health and relationships, and contributes to the prevention of bullying.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Willans Hill School implements the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework as a whole-school approach to support the development of respectful, responsible, and caring learners. PBL provides a consistent and proactive system for teaching and reinforcing positive behaviour across all school settings. This is achieved through:
- Explicit instruction of expected behaviours across different environments.
- Consistent reinforcement and recognition of students demonstrating safe, respectful, and responsible behaviours.
This tiered system ensures consistency in expectations and responses, fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for all students.
At Willans Hill School we have three core values, and these apply across all settings including school, home and community:
1. Be Responsible
- Be a learner
- Make positive choices
- Look after equipment
2. Be Respectful
- Wait your turn
- Listen to others
- Be kind to others
3. Be Safe
- Respect personal space
- Follow instructions
- Mind your body
Roger Roo is our mascot, and encourages us to be responsible, respectful and safe learners.
Zones of Regulation
As part of our whole school approach to behaviour management, Willans Hill School implements The Zones of Regulation program to support students in developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and social-emotional skills. The program helps students identify and categorise their emotions into four colour-coded zones: green, yellow, blue, and red. There are no 'right' or 'wrong' zones - rather, the emphasis is placed on recognising emotional states and learning appropriate strategies to manage them.
The green zone represents a state of optimal learning and engagement - students are calm, focused, and ready to learn and interact positively. When students find themselves in the yellow, blue, or red zones, they are supported to use personalised tools and strategies from their individual 'toolboxes' to regulate their emotions and return to the green zone. This consistent, school-wide language and approach empowers students to take ownership of their behaviour and supports a safe, inclusive, and emotionally responsive learning environment.
