Learning
At Willans Hill School, we follow the NSW curriculum and provide a variety of learning experiences designed to support every student. We know literacy and numeracy are essential foundations for learning and everyday life, and our teachers use evidence-based strategies to help each student progress and achieve their individual goals.
Why choose us for your child’s learning?
Inclusive and supportive learning
At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn.

Engaging opportunities
At Willans Hill School, we offer a variety of programs in the classroom and across the school to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.
What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
Our learning approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:
- Structured literacy and numeracy instruction: Hands-on, clear and sequential lessons to build strong literacy and numeracy foundations for all students, including programs such as University of Florida Literacy Institute program (UFLI).
- Varied communication supports: We use a wide range of tools and strategies including visuals, AUSLAN, and both high-tech and low-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support every student’s ability to communicate and participate.
- Technology-supported learning: Students engage with technology such as iPads, assistive devices and interactive screens to build digital skills and enhance learning.
- Flexible and individualised teaching: Programs and supports are tailored to each student’s needs, with a strong focus on wellbeing, engagement and meaningful progress.
- Community connections: Students participate in work experience, excursions and partnerships with local organisations and schools to build real-world skills and confidence.
Helping students progress
We support every student’s academic progress by:
- checking their progress and giving clear and timely feedback
- setting individual learning goals with each student
- creating with Personalised Learning and Support Plans (PLSPs), with parents/carers and support from specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s learning progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
- providing targeted literacy and numeracy support in small groups
- making wellbeing part of everyday learning
- helping students through transitions, like starting school or moving to a new stage of learning.
