Mother's Day high tea

Mother's Day at Willans Hill School was celebrated this year in fine form with the P&C hosting a High Tea. The prizes for the raffle were all donated by local businesses and individuals and were greatly received by the lucky winners. A beautifully decorated photobooth frame was set up for the visitors to have a special photo taken.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Swimming Carnival 2018

High School students at Willans Hill School participated in the 2018 Multi School Swimming Carnival organised by Riverina School Sport.

It was a great day, with events such as freestyle, backstroke and many novelty events.

The students and staff had a fantastic time and many ribbons were won!

Year 12 Graduation

The Year 12 students had their graduation evening. It was a wonderful night where the students were able to celebrate their success and achievements over the last 13 years, with their families and friends.

New furniture

All classes across the school received new furniture over the Summer holidays. This furniture is bright and comfortable, as well as being functional for the classrooms. The Primary area have new tables and chairs that suit the smaller size of this aged students. The High School area have new tables and chairs for the High School students to work at. Each class also has multiple pieces of furniture to be used as sensory tools, including bean bags and wobble chairs.

Healthy Harold life education van

Athletics carnival

The Junior, Middle and Senior school students all participated in an inter-school athletics carnival. The students had a chance to run races, compete in field events and participate in novelty races. The days was enjoyed by all.

Riverina environmental education centre

Recently, classes across the school visited the Riverina Environmental Education Centre. They participated in activities such as hut building, spear throwing, exploring life cycles, learning about Australian animals and so many more educational and fun activities.

Junior school oddysea excursion

The Junior School went on a two day excursion to the Civic Theatre. The first day involved the students experiencing the environment and meeting the performers. This allowed the students to settle into the performance on the second day without anxiety.

The performance was based around the ocean and going on a journey. It involved singing and dancing, and had various sensory experiences for the students to explore. There were bubbles to blow, lolly snakes to eat, sand and shells to feel and light up orbs to see.

The performance involved all the students and was amazing.

Transport day

The students enjoyed the annual Transport Day.

The day is organised by a parent of two former students, Emily and Tom. Chris Harmer goes above and beyond to organise this fantastic day for the students of Willans Hill School.

Trucks, motorbikes, fire trucks, police cars, ambulance vans and vintage cars all make the day fun for everyone!

ANZAC Day ceremony

Our school captains represented our school beautifully yesterday during the ANZAC ceremony.

We also had four students marching in the ANZAC Day March down Baylis Street on behalf of our school.

Community cup football match

On Saturday 11 March 12 students from Year 9-12 played in a touch football match against the local Wagga Police in the Community Cup. This match was part of the Reconciliation Cup which is a rugby match between local Wagga Indigenous All-Stars and Wagga Non-Indigenous All-Stars.

The students had previously trained as a team, led by Luke from Anglicare, and were very excited about the game. They loved wearing the team shirts and playing in a competitive match against the Police.

Thank you to Anglicare Riverina and Relationships Australia for the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Community Cup, and thank you to the Wagga Police for the great game!

Yoga

The Middle and Senior School students have been participating in weekly sport. The students have the option between 3 sports: swimming, bowling and yoga.

The yoga sessions are held in the school hall and have two parts to them. First the students complete a range of yoga exercises, and then take part in meditation relaxation exercises.

There is an instructor as well as staff demonstrating actions, and the students are brilliant at demonstrating their skills.

Staff professional development days

Building Quality Relationships with Choice Theory and the Positive Outcome Process

On the 3rd and 4th of February all the staff were fortunate enough to attend professional learning delivered by Judy Hatswell.
Judy Hatswell is both a teacher and registered psychologist who has held managerial positions at state-wide and regional levels in student welfare, guidance and behaviour disorders.

Over two days, staff at Willans Hill School learnt about the theory, or why, people do the things they do, using "connecting behaviours, rather than disconnecting behaviours", the "Total Behaviour Car", the Circle of Strength and Cycle of Blame" and the "Conflict Cycle".

Staff found that this knowledge could be applied to interactions with students, other staff and parents/carers, to help us understand others better, and communicate more effectively.

Year 12 Graduation

The Year 12 Graduation was held on December 2nd at the Wagga Wagga RSL Club. There were five students graduating this year; they were accompanied by five Navy personal. The night began with photos with their partners and families and continued with the presentation of their Graduation Certificates.

Graduates, their families and staff from Willans Hill School enjoyed a wonderful evening which concluded with fabulous dancing and fun.

We would like to thank the Wagga Wagga RSL Club and JM Productions for their continued help and support of the Willans Hill School Year 12 Graduation.

Spring into Summer Colour Fun Day

The Junior School held a "Sping into Summer" Colour Fun Day.

All the students were involved in colourful, messy, sensory activities that delighted the senses.

We popped bubbles, dug in sand, mixed slime and ran through colour powder.

The students had an amazing time!

Loud Shirt Day

Our School participated in Loud Shirt Day to raise money for children with a hearing impairment. Our students were encouraged to wear a bright shirt, crazy hair or anything else "loud" for a gold coin donation.

School Disco

Our students enjoyed dancing at the recent school discos.

The Junior students were first to dance, sing and have fun with their friends. Glow sticks and loud music were the favourites of the night.

The Middle and Senior school students adored the opportunity to socialise and have fun with their friends, outside of classes.

A huge thank you goes to JM Productions Wagga for being the DJs and lighting crew for this fabulous night.

Athletics Carnival 2016

On Thursday 27th October students from K-12 attended the Regional Athletics Carnival.

There were a range of other schools in attendance, and it was a great opportunity to compete against our peers.

All students participated in a range of events, including long jump, high jump and running races.

The Junior students also joined in with novelty events such as eggs and spoon races and bean bags throwing.

P&C Movie Night

The Willans Hill School P&C held a fundraiser movie night for the premiere screening of Bridget Jones's Baby. It was a fantastic event, attended by over 200 people.

Father's Day with the Juniors

The Junior School students invited their Dads (Grandads and Mums too) to come into school and complete some great woodworking activities.

Bunnings provided all the tools, activities and paint, as well as a fantastic staff member to come along and run the session.

Everyone had a great time creating trucks, key holders and serving trays.

Footy Colours Day

On Friday 2nd August the students dressed in their favourite football team gear to raise money for the Fight Cancer Foundation.

We had a huge range of AFL, NRL and soccer teams represented. The Swans were the pick for AFL and the Dragons were the pick for NRL.

Book Week

Across the whole school students got into the spirit of Book Week and dressed up as their favourite book characters.

From The Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland) to Harry (Harry Potter) all kinds of book characters were on display. The students enjoyed showing off their costumes and talking about what character their friends were wearing.

Swimming Carnival

Middle and Senior School students participated in the Riverina Swimming Carnival.

It was a fabulous day, with the students showing of their swimming skills to represent the school.

Students participated in a range of events, such as freestyle, relay and novelty events, as well as cheering on their friends.

Bridging the Gap Performance

On Tuesday 23^rd August all the students watched an Indigenous performance in the school hall. During the performance, the students were shown a digeridoo, treated to a traditional Wiradjuri story and participated in some dances.

It was a fantastic experience, and everyone learnt more about Indigenous culture.

Education Week

Education Week was a great success with a fantastic open afternoon, attended by many familes.

As part of the afternoon a Circles Art Exhibition was held. All students completed an artwork with 'circles' as the central theme. These artworks were put on display for students and their families to view and vote on. The students thouroughly enjoyed creating these artworks and familes loved the chance to vote for their favourite.

Marucs was the winner chosen by the students and their families.

Families also has the chance to visit their children at school and participate in a number of activities, lessons and games.

Dance Workshop

Students at Willans Hill School were all given the opportunity to participate in a Dance Workshop run by the Department of Education Arts Unit. Many schools from across the Riverina came to Willans Hill School to participate. Students enjoyed many opportunities to learn new dance steps and perform these dances at the end of the Workshop.

National Simultaneous Storytime and Hat Day

To coincide with National Simultaneous Storytime and the reading of the book "I Got This Hat", we had a special Hat Day.

National Simultaneous Storytime involves students at schools across Australia reading a book at the same time on the same day. The book "I Got This Hat", which is about a child exploring hats from different occupations and cultures. The students at Willans Hill School were encouraged to wear hats from around the world or different occupations.

Transport Day

The annual Willans Hill Transport Day was held on the 16th of May. We were visited by vintage cars, motorbikes, emergency services and a variety of trucks. The students love the opportunity to engage with community members and climb aboard the vehicles. \

Fire Safety Presentation

On the 13th of May, the school had a visit from the NSW Fire Brigade. The students learnt about a variety of aspects of fire safety, including what to do in case of a fire.

The presentation was very hands on, with the students able to touch and wear uniforms and go on board a fire truck.

We thank the Fire men and women who came to give this very important presentation.

Community Cup Touch Football

On Friday March 18th, a team of students played a curtain raiser at the Group 9 Rugby League All Stars match at McDonald's Park. The team played a game of touch football against the Police team, vying for the "Community Cup". One dollar from every admission fee was donated to the school for sporting purposes.

Junior Playground Opening

For the last 5 years, the P&C and school community have been planning and fundraising for a new Junior Playground. Fundraising has included Wagga Wagga Takes 2, BBQs and raffles.

On Friday 13th November the new Junior Playground was officially opened to the great delight of all the students.

Ghana Beat My Drum

On Wednesday 25th November the whole school had a visit from a fabulous Ghanaian drummer.

The students loved dancing and singing along, the music was upbeat and fun.

Some lucky students also got the chance to play different types of drums.

Surf Life Saving Visit

On Tuesday 24th November, Surf Live Saving Australia came to visit to teach the students about beach and water safety.

The students learnt about swimming between the flags, how life savers help people in the water, and what dangers they might find at the beach.

Visit from Denise and Bruce Morcombe

On Wednesday 21st October we had a very special visit from Bruce and Denise Morcombe as part of their tour of the Riverina, speaking to schools registered for Day for Daniel on October 30th.

Some Junior School students met with the Morcombes and learnt about what Day for Daniel is, and how important child safety is.

Willans Hill School will be participating in Day for Daniel by all wearing red and learning about keeping safe.

Christian College Visit

On the last day of Term 3, the Year 12s from Wagga Wagga Christian College came to visit Willans Hill School. They performed some fantastic songs, played some fun games with us and even bought pizza for lunch!

Archibull

Kooringal High School in conjunction with Willans Hill School are participating in the 'Archibull Project'. The project is part of Picture You in Agriculture initiative, which aims to engage students in agricultural and environmental awareness through art. To do this, the two schools each have a cow to decorate with the theme of beef cattle.

Our school captains visited Kildare College to accept our cow.

We had a visit from a Veterinary Studies student who is from a rural farm. She spoke about the beef cattle industry and its importance to us all.

5 of our senior students visited Kooringal High School to help them paint their cow.

Onesie Day

On Friday September 11th we held a Onesie Day to support Kye Ritchie on his once in a lifetime trip to Gallipoli in 2016.

The students enjoyed that chance to dress up in a Onesie and have a special morning tea.

On Friday 28th August the students came dressed as their favourite book character, bringing in a gold coin to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

The Great Book Swap was also held, where each student brought in a book and swapped it with a friend.

Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 20th August, the Middle and Senior School students went to the Oasis to participate in an Inter-Schools Swimming Carnival. The students swam in a variety of events, including 50m and 25m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly, and novelty events. We had competitors in every event which was fantastic. The students swam hard, and had a great time.

Dance Workshop

A Dance Workshop was held at our school on Wednesday July 22^nd. Students from a range of schools attended. Some of our Middle and High School students were involved, and had a fantastic time. The students got to practise lots of dance moves and learnt many new ones.

A Letter To Our School Community

Dear Parents and Carers,

Following a report of a potential safety concern near the school this morning, we implemented our prepared safety procedures to ensure the wellbeing of staff and students at Willans Hill School.

As a precaution all parents, carers and students arriving at school were notified where possible.

The police were advised and they attended the school and resolved the concern.

I would like to commend staff, students, parents, police and transport staff on the smooth operation of our safety procedure. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this disruption.

On April 24th the whole school came together to hold an ANZAC Day ceremony.

Every student took part with each class having different roles. The students learnt about what ANZAC stands for, what the symbols of ANZAC are, and why we remember those who lost their lives.

Transport Day

Each year in May, Willans Hill hosts a Transport Day, organised by one of the amazing former parents, Chris Harmer. Transport Day is a very popular day, with the students all enjoying the chance to get up and close with a variety of vehicles, including trucks, police cars and classic cars.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day (21st March) celebrates Australia's cultural diversity. It's about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. On Friday 20th March the students and staff of Willans Hill wore orange clothing and held Harmony Day celebrations. This year's theme was 'Recipes For Harmony'. In our school, each class chose a country and supplied food traditionally associated with their country. Classes gathered together to share dishes and participate in fun and interactive experiences that encouraged friendship, respect and diversity. Look at our photos to see what an amazing day we had.
